The Southern Graphics Council will celebrate its 30th anniversary April 3-6, 2002 by returning to the city where we were first formed: NEW ORLEANS!  In 1972 a handful of printmakers lead by Boyd Saunders gathered during a meeting of the Southeastern College Art Conference.  From that initial meeting the Southern Graphics Council was born, and is now the largest printmaking organization in North America.  To celebrate our history we invite you to attend PRINT GUMBO!

A Note on the Cost of this Conference:  The costs of the Print Gumbo conference, for attending members and for the organization, will be greater than at previous SGC conferences.  They are, however, in line with conferences held by many other major professional organizations.  The SGC Board has approved spending $10,000 to support this conference and we have no direct or in-kind institutional support from a university host.  As such we will have to pay many thousands of dollars for the rental of meeting and exhibit spaces in the conference hotel, audio visual services, and even tables and chairs for each event, resources that are usually provided by the host institution.  Our contract stipulates that our room rental rates at the Radisson are based on an assumed total of hotel food services - member breakfasts, lunches, receptions, and dinners.  While we will achieve that total, we will be subsidizing to an extent the cost of the box lunches for members, even though they will appear to be greater than what we have all come to expect.  We strongly encourage our members to stay with the program, lunch in the hotel, and help make this conference a success. [Further, leaving the hotel in search of cheaper meals will undoubtedly result in members wandering too far, not saving all that much money, becoming distracted, and missing important conference events and experiences.]  Remember that the SGC is a volunteer organization and that the folks working on this conference are receiving no compensation. This conference also features fewer presenting personnel for fewer honoraria and fewer registration waivers, all for the purposes of keeping costs in check and keeping the focus on the celebratory history of SGC.  We hope the SGC membership will work with the SGC by registering early, signing up for all of the meals, and encouraging attendance and participation in this important anniversary of our organization.
