Direct Object

So let's try a few more examples of direct objects which are nouns or proper nouns:

Pablo eats the lunch. Pablo come el almuerzo.
Marta writes the paper. Marta escribe el papel

Ana invites Manuel. Ana invita a Manuel.*
We call the boy. Llamamos al niño.*
*Special rule: If the direct object is a person, the "personal a" is required, and whenever "a" precedes "el," the two words are contracted to "al"

With direct objects, ask yourself "whom" or "what" receives the action of the verb:
Pable eats - what? - the lunch
Marta writes - what - the paper.
Ana invites - whom? - Manuel.
We call - whom? - the boy.

The next page will review nouns as indirect objects and objects of prepositions.
