Telling Time

English: What time is it? It is 1:00.

English: It's 3:00 p.m.
(page down): Son las tres de la tarde.

In Spanish, time is expressed as the hours of the clock, with a.m. and p.m. expressing "of the morning," or "of the afternoon or night."

In English, we say:
What time is it?
It's 1:00 o'clock; or it's 1:00 p.m.

In Spanish, we say:
"¿Qué hora es?"
"Es la una"; or "Es la una de la tarde."

The Spanish is literally translated:

English: "What hour is it?"
(page down)"Es la una"; or "Es la una de la tarde."
English: "It is the one"; or "It is the one of the afternoon."

English: "It is two o'clock a.m." is translated as
(page down)"Son las dos de la mañana" ("They are the two of the morning.")

English: "What time is it? It is 1:00." is translated as
(page down)"Que hora es? Es la una." ("What hour is it? It is the one.')
English: "It's 3:00 p.m." is translated as
(page down)"Son las tres de la tarde." ("They are the three of the afternoon.")

But what about the minutes? Of course, digital time can be used:
English: "It is 3:35."
(page down)"Son las tres y treinta-y-cinco."
But more conventionally, minutes from one minute to 29 minutes after the hours are expressed after the hour:
"It is 5:25" - "Son las cinco y veinticinco."
"It is 2:10" - "Son las dos y diez."

And minutes from 31 to 59 minutes after the hour are expressed as subtractions from the next hour:
English: "It is 4:35"

English: "It is 8:40"
(page down)"Son las nueve menos veinte."

As in English, the quarter and half-hour are expressed:
3:15 = las tres y cuarto (the three and fourth)
8:30 = las ocho y media (the eight and half)

In addition, mid-day and midnight are also expressed:
"It is 12 noon" - "Son las doce del mediodía
"It is midnight" - "Son las doce de la medianoche."
