Publication Guidelines for Journal of Education Opportunity

General articles and research manuscripts submitted for publication must (a) be between 1,200-5,000 words long, (b) adhere to rules in the most recent edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA) with the following exceptions: (i) figures and tables should be placed in-column in the text where you prefer them to appear, and (ii) in References, please use italics instead of underlines. Articles should deal with some relevant aspect of educational opportunity such as educational research, evaluation, instruction, teaching methods, policy making, or theoretical discourses related to educational opportunities.

In addition, the Journal of Educational Opportunity is soliciting book, test, and computer hard/software reviews (500-700 words), and research in brief manuscripts (800-1,200 words) with similar publication goals. Authors interested in submitting a manuscript are required to follow the APA format as noted above, forward four copies of the manuscript, and forward a copy on microcomputer floppy diskette (preferably saved in Rich Text Format-"rtf", or as a Microsoft Word *.doc document on 3.5" diskette) to assist in the production process. We may also ask you to forward your document electronically as an e-mail attachment.

Style and Submission Requirements

Copies. Submit four hard copies of manuscript on 8.5" x 11" bond paper. Also submit appropriate 3.5" diskette copy.

Style. Adhere to the most recent edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA) to format your manuscript. Please remember the two exceptions: (a) place any tables or figures in-column where each should appear, and (b) in references, use italics instead of underlines. Any paper that does not otherwise follow APA style will not be considered. Make certain that documentation (reference) format rules are especially double-checked. In addition, avoid footnotes; do not include your name/affiliation on any page after the title page. Include autobiographical data about yourself, position, work experience, etc. Insert only one space after punctuation at the end of sentences.

Another word about Tables and Figures. Please remember that the JEO publishes in black and white, not in color. When creating or saving a copy of your manuscript for JEO publication, please create any Tables and/or Figures in black and white (you may need to return to your original manuscript and configure any Tables/Figures for black and white reproduction.)

Also, please do not place your table or figure Titles inside the Table or Figure (you may need to return to an underlying spreadsheet file, e.g., and delete any Table/Figure titles that you originally embedded inside the table or chart.) Rather, include the titles as part of your regular text, adjacent to its related item.

General Articles and Research Manuscripts. General articles and research manuscripts must be between 1,200-5,000 words long, or not more than 20 typed pages (double-spaced). Authors should keep tables and figures to a minimum and include them in-column at the proper point(s) of insertion. Emphasis is particularly placed upon manuscripts that are research-oriented.

Cover Page. Authors must include a removable cover page that is attached to each manuscript. This cover page should include the title of the manuscript; the name, address, phone number, title, and institutional affiliation of each author, and a brief description of area of specialization.

Abstract. Abstracts describing the manuscript must be 200 or fewer words and must be printed on a separate sheet.

Book Reviews. Book reviews should be between 500 and 750 words in length and contain the following information: complete bibliographic entry, including cost (hard- and softcover, if available); the thesis of the book; a brief description of the argument (main ideas); sample passages quoted and/or commentary on writing style; shortcomings and good points; intended audience-whom the book will most benefit in the TRIO community; your opinion of the book-citing any pros and cons that deal with same topic; and what you think the book contributes.

Test Reviews. Test reviews should be between 500 and 750 words in length and contain the following information: complete bibliographic entry, including cost; the main purpose(s) of test; a brief description of the administration and time; shortcomings andgood points; intended audience-whom will the test most benefit in the TRIO community; your opinion of it-citing any similar tests and noting the pros and cons that deal with similar tests; and what you think it contributes to the field of educ- ation.

Research In Brief. Research In Brief manuscripts should be between 800 and 1,200 words and should include a clear statement of the problem and purpose; a brief review of the literature; and the methods, findings, conclusions, and recommendations.

Computer Reviews. Computer hardware and software reviews should be between 500 and 750 words long and contain the following information: item being reviewed; company that produced it; "on-the-street" cost of item; shortcomings and good points; intended audience-who will benefit in the TRIO community; your opinion of it-citing any similar hardware or software; and what you think it contributes to the field of education.

Review Process. Once your manuscript has been received, it will be checked for conformity to style and Journal requirements, then forwarded to at least three peer review readers who will read your manuscript and make recommendations as to whether to accept or reject it for publication. Unless they are inappropriate for review due to length and/ or topic, manuscripts submitted to the Journal of Educational Opportunity are anonymously reviewed by a peer review reader group as noted above. You will receive a publication decision within a reasonable amount of time (normally 2 to 3 months). Do not submit manuscripts concurrently under consideration by another publication, or manuscripts that were previously published.
