Club Objective:
The Martial Arts Club at UT (UTMA) exists
- To offer interested persons an opportunity to learn the principles of the Martial Arts as a means toward physical and mental discipline.
- To enjoy and practice the Martial Arts for fun or competitive purposes.
- To promote general interest in the Martial Arts as an aid in developing sportmanship, leadership, cultural diversity, physical and mental well being, self-control, self-confidence, self-defense, and an overall better lifestyle
Club Background:
The UTMA Club was founded in 1991 by Dr. Donald Tyrell. Since the beginning, the club has given students the opportunity to compete nation wide and develop effective self-defense skills. The club offers instruction to all levels of athletes and contributes to their needs. The club practices Monday through Thursday in studio 10 of the T-Recs facility. Please refer to the schedule for specific class meeting times.
Membership:
Anyone interested in joining the UTMA club, may check the schedule for the meeting time of the art or arts that you are interested in and simply show up wearing loose-fitting workout clothing.
- Members must be students, faculty, employees of the University of Tennessee, or any non-student approved by the Sports Club Executive Council.
- Visitors may work out with UTMA by invitation from the club members or the club officers.
- All members and guests must sign a Sports Club waiver.
Meeting Times and Locations:
Meeting times vary depending on the art you wish to participate in. To see the times and dates for all of the arts offered through the UTMA club, check the schedule. Times are also listed on the club pages. All classes meet in Studio 10 of the T-Recs facility.
Fees:
The instructors are not paid for their time, however, club dues are collected to provide for such items as equipment, clinics, and travel expenses. Partcipants are required to pay dues at the start of each semester, Fall and Spring.
Dues for the club are $45 per semester. This allows you to participate in all of the classes the club offers at no additional charge.
You will also need to purchase the proper uniform for your art. Please refer to the class pages for the cost of the uniform.
Some participants may also choose to join a national or international club for competition and other purposes. This is not required for participation at UT, but is an additional cost you might want to consider.
