My name is Joe Ferguson and I am an IT Administrator II with the University Libraries at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
I started working at the John C. Hodges Library as a volunteer in May 1997, the summer before I started high school. I went on to be a student worker for four years before getting a full time staff position in 2002.
I worked in the main Circulation Department and Reserve Department where I quickly began learning HTML and website design. As my technical expertise grew I took on desktop support and networking and eventually web programming. I have been a web programmer since 2006 and a system administrator since 2014.
I currently work in the Enterprise Systems Unit for the University of Tennessee Libraries where I serve as a System Administrator for Alma (an ExLibris Product) & ILLiad (an Atlas Systems Product), UX Designer for Primo (an ExLibris Product), as well as custom programming for the University Libraries as a whole.
I have five children and am slowly working on my bachelor's degree in Interdisciplinary Studies.

The basic components of any website. As technologies advance so do these programming languages.
Commonly used to create interactive effects within web browsers. jQuery is a JavaScript library that allows for document manipulation and event handling.
A programming language especially suited for web development and works easily with HTML.
The world's most popular open source database. Its performance and reliability has helped MySQL become the leading database choice for web-based applications.
XML is used to move data across the internet. XLST is used to format the data.
API's help pass data to and from computer systems without having to actual "touch" the data itself. This helps preserve data integrity and security.
Adobe Photoshop is one of the most popular image editing programs in the world. Essential for website design.
I specialize in evaluting staff workflows and system limitations and programming a custom solution that fit the needs of the staff with the information in the system so work is streamlined and not duplicated.
