3/2003~7/2005, Research associate at Brown University (with A.F. Bower and K.-S. Kim)
As a member in the General Motors/Brown Collaborative Research Lab (CRL) on Computational Materials Research, conducting researches on
§
Multiscale modeling and experiments on surface plasticity and adhesion. A particular emphasis is placed on dislocation plasticity of indentation of stepped surface.
§
Simulation of microstructural evolution with cohesive zone, crystal plasticity, grain boundary motion, grain boundary diffusion etc.
§
Adhesive, viscoelastic indentation.
§
Mechanisms of tribolayer formation of Si-Al composite under repeated sliding.
9/1999~2/2003, Ph.D thesis: Nanoscale domain stabilities on solid surfaces and guided self-assembly, (with Z. Suo at Princeton University)
My thesis work identifies and simulates mechanisms of mechanically and/or electrically induced compositional self-assembly at nanoscale. Pattern formation and evolution are studied in a non-equilibrium thermodynamic framework and a phase-field model for computer simulation. We also investigate how to manipulate the self-organized patterns by symmetry breaking, strain engineering, and guided self-assembly.
