This course is taught irregularly and is not yet part of the standard SIS curriculum. It has been taught three times to date.
The course introduces the major elements of reader's advisory work and applies them to genre fiction. The genres normally covered are: adventure, Christian or inspirational fiction, fantasy, historical fiction, horror, mysteries, romance, and science fiction. Considerable emphasis is placed on identification of appeal elements in a work and how to help the reader select the right book.
Assignments include: book talk, identification of appeal elements, preparing book annotations, analysis of Fiction_L traffic, browsing in chain book stores, and finding genre WWW sites. Some change in class activities may result if the class is larger than expected.
All lecture notes are available on this WWW site. Some, however, some need to be revised.
Robinson's brief comments on genre books recently read are available here.
