IS 561 is normally taught each year in the Spring semester and is available every other year.
Emphasis is on ink on paper books, including the economics of book publishing and the major types of book publishing. Both automation of book publishing and the digital book receive some attention. This elective should interest those likely to be involved in collection development of popular print materials in libraries and those who need background for work in digital publishing.
Course requirements include three essays from a list of topics and the critique of the quality and utility of the design and manufacturing quality of one "cloth" trade book. A brief oral report during the final examination period is required when the course is only available for Knoxville students.
