Date:27 March 2001

Subject:Measures of Success

To: Department Heads

From:William C. Robinson, Head of Libraries

The Board of Trustees have instructed the President to ask each college and school at Hurstbourne to adopt "measures of success." These measures will clearly indicate the degree to which the academic unit is successful. Since the University Library is somewhat equivalent to a college, we do will need to adopt appropriate measures of success.

We need to be most careful in selecting these measures. Obviously, the measures need to be persuasive, but they also need to be gathered, analyzed and interpreted without undue effort. It is clear from comment by the President that traditional library statistics such as circulation will not be well received.

At our next staff meeting, I look forward to your thoughtful discussion of the assets and liabilities associated with various measures. We need to do a better job of providing clear evident that the University Library is essential to the University.
