IS 430: History of the Book

This course is taught infrequently.

Major focus is on the history of the book and graphic communication from rock carving and painting to Gutenberg. Some attention is given to the machine printed book and periodical publishing. This is a course with considerable breadth, but little depth.

Requires three essays from a list of topics and a final examination. Graduate students are required to do some additional work.

This is a broad, historical elective course which may be taken for either graduate or undergraduate credit. It is intended to provide librarians, and others, with some understanding of how the contemporary book came to be as well as its impact in the past.

The course syllabus is available, but has not been revised in some time.
