The Influence of the Bible on Dylan Lyrics

The purpose of this portion of the Slow Train Coming Home Page is to illustrate some of the many direct links between Dylan's links and the Bible.

And I do mean DIRECT LINKS. Not the "You know, there's a word in these lyrics which also shows up in the Bible" or "The subject of this lyric shows up in the Bible." I mean clear links which are either obvious quotes or paraphrases of Biblical material, or links which represent clear allusions, or links which represent references to events recounted in the Bible.

This won't be a place for extended commentary. The purpose of commentary, when it does happen, will be to make the link clear.

How will this area be organized? As best as I can, chronologically. Or, more precisely: I'll follow the sequence in Lyrics when the song is contained therein. Otherwise, I'll splice them in based on the best that I know.

Some excellent resources:

Cartwright, Bert (1992). The Bible in the Lyrics of Bob Dylan. Wanted Man Press.

Dylan, Bob (1987). Lyrics. HarperCollins, New York.

The King James Bible.
