Fantasy Tree
In contrast to some of my more careful studys from natural
settings, I was inspired to create a tree image from imagination.
Although having certain organic features, this mixed-media painting was
more of an approach to pattern and reactions to nature, than actual
observation. Originally begun as a watercolor of several trees, I cropped
out what I believed to be the only successful area within the work.
Afterwards, I started the simplification of sky and ground to bring added
focus to the ornate qualities of my imagined tree. The spaces
surrounding the tree were treated with gesso, acrylic paint, chalk
pastels, and colored pencils. This combination of materials and techniques
on paper expresses my desire to continue with a mixed-media approach
to making art.
