Conrad H. Payne was born to Paris L. and Geneva M. Payne on December 10, 1931. He attended Knoxville High School where he graduated in the class of 1949. His first wife was Anna Rose Simpson, who had been a member of the Knoxville Catholic High School class of 1952, the year after McCarthy graduated. Conrad died in Knoxville on May 8, 1970, and is buried in Lynnhurst Cemetery. Cormac McCarthy was one of the pallbearers at his funeral.
