Ed McGinley grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania playing competitive ice hockey, providing for a smooth transition to lacrosse, and making his profound effect on the sport quite ironic. Lacrosse for Ed, began at Penn State University where he quickly picked up the sport, and brought his fire, determination, and athletic ability to his team and the sport he now so loves. After college Ed dedicated his time to coaching little league and summer clinics until he moved to Knoxville, TN. In 1997 Ed joined forces with Alex White and then head coach, Buff Grubb of the Tennessee Volunteers. For three years, McGinley served as the midfield and conditioning coach. “He brought unity and a much needed drive to a team of individuals,” explains former UT player Thomas Brimley. McGinley played a significant role in leading the Vols to back-to-back SELC championships, a feat that no other team had previously accomplished. After leading the Vols to two titles and five consecutive SELC tournament appearances McGinley was forced to resign after the 2000 season. Leaving behind a hungry and well molded Tennessee squad, McGinley’s focus shifted to the new additions to his family, twins Conner and Devin. “Ed was an inspiration to us both on and off the field,” says Nate Tutt former all-USLIA goalie that played under McGinley. “He was sorely missed, but we respected both his decision and devotion to his family.”
Coach McGinely who returned to the Vols squad in the fall of 2003 will provide a much needed boost for the Volunteers come spring and the 2004 season. “He brings to table elements of the game which most coaches would overlook and even underestimate,” colleague and assistant coach Alex White. The addition of McGinley will introduce motivation and dedication to a young team, and complete an already solid coaching staff. The return of McGinely could not have come at a better time for the Volunteers having just come off of two consecutive seasons under 500. “It was a huge morale boost for our upperclassmen, and promises to be a great means of inspiration for the young guys on this team,” explained captain, Chris Bicsak. Said head coach of the Volunteers and former all-American Andy Frick, “It feels good to have a coach of his caliber on the sidelines. It is easy to get complaisant during the season, but Ed brings a steady focus and energy to the sideline.” McGinley looks forward to rejoining the Vols for the 2004 season and hopes for a return to dominance in the SELC.
