The University of Tennessee Volunteer Lacrosse team grabbed their
first win of the season Friday February 13th against Georgia Tech.
The win improves the Vols season record to 1-1 while dropping
the Yellow Jackets to 0-1. Game time conditions were clear and
cool making for a great night for lacrosse at the University of
Tennessee Intramural Fields. The Vols brought a balanced attack,
seeing goals from six different players; three from senior attackman
Chris Bicsak, two from sophomore midfielder Matt Purcell. Junior
attackman Larry Tilley, freshman attackman Jim Blunden, freshmen
midfielders Michael Samarin and Matt Wagner each scored one apiece.
“It was good to get a win under our belts and it was good
confidence builder for a young squad,” said Assistant Coach
Andy Frick. The Vols entered the game as underdogs to the 17th
nationally ranked Yellow Jackets.
The first quarter saw three goals from Jacket midfielder Will
Oakley, including the first of the game three minutes after the
opening face off. The Vols managed to get 2 in the net the first
quarter, one from Bicsak and one from Purcell. The second quarter
belonged to Tech as the Jackets scored 4 unanswered goals until
Bicsak managed to put a loose ball in with 4:41 left before half
time. At the half Will Oakley had five of Tech’s seven goals
and it seemed that Tennessee could do nothing to stop him. Tennessee
utilized the break in play to rework their game plan and it paid
off. Although the Jackets would score the first goal of the second
half it would end up being their last. Tennessee took the game
over and produced the last six goals for the final score of 9
to 8. The game came down to the wire when UT was unable gain possession
of ball for the last 4 minutes. But because of Tennessee’s
solid defensive stand and a key interception by junior longstick
Adam Ritter, Tennessee was able to top the Jackets.
“This was a good win for our guys but it left a lot of room
for improvement,” remarked head coach Alex White. “I
am proud of our guys, they never gave up but if we want to keep
wining we are going to have to improve. Every game we need to
play better then we did in the previous one. The goal is to peak
in the championship.” The Vols will try to carry their momentum
into their next game vs. Vanderbilt this Sunday at 1:00pm on the
intramural field.
