The University of Tennessee Lacrosse Team improved their season record
to 2-1 with an overtime victory over the Vanderbilt Commodores Sunday
afternoon at the intramural fields. The Vols posted an impressive second
consecutive come from behind win over the hated Dores after squeaking
by Georgia Tech Friday evening. Game time conditions proved as formidable
an adversary as the opposing squad with game time temperatures starting
at 40 degrees and dropping to below freezing with rain turning to sleet.
The emotional 10-9 win was keyed in large part to the stand out play of
Senior attackman Chris Bicsak (Brentwood, TN) and a lock down defense
led by Junior defenseman Chris Kirk (Brentwood, TN). Bicsak contributed
7 of the vols 9 goals with A.J. Howland (Longwood, FL) providing 18 saves
in front of the net. The Vols jumped out to an early lead as Bicsak scored
at four minutes into the first quarter on an assist from Freshman midfielder
Michael Samarin (Farragut, TN). The Dores tied the game at three apiece
at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter saw the Vanderbilt
squad open up a 7-5 lead. At the end of the third quarter the Commodores
led 8-7. The fourth quarter ended at nine all after Junior midfielder
Gray Fuller scored with just 7 ticks left on the clock. The Vols stood
up and took charge in overtime, freshman attackman Jim “Boomer”
Blunden (Carthage, NY) fed Bicsak for his 5th and final assist, hitting
Bicsak with great pass for the deciding score. “We were very fortunate
to get a win tonight,” said coach Alex White after the emotional
victory. “Ball control was the key to this victory, when we were
able to settle down on offense we were able to score,” added assistant
coach and former Vol All-American Andy Frick. The Volunteers travel to
Atlanta for a South Eastern Lacrosse Conference game against the Emory
Eagles Saturday afternoon before returning to the friendly confines of
UT intramural fields to face the Fighting Illini of Illinois on Friday
February 27th @ 9pm.
