I've
spent some time researching existing scorebooks to develop a bit
of a sense of UT lacrosse history. To say these statistics are
incomplete is an understatement. After all, the actual origins
of Tennessee lacrosse are shrouded in mystery. Does anyone out
there remember when lacrosse first appeared on the Hill in Knoxville.
For quite some time, the general assumption was that lacrosse
was first played at UT in the mid-70's but rumors persist that
the team first got on its feet back in the late 1960's. It'd be
great to try to get a better handle on the early days of UT lacrosse.
If anyone out there has information, we'd much appreciate it being
shared. It'd be fantastic if we could find some photos from those
days as well. If you have information to share, please email us
via the website: www.volslax.com
I've
pulled these statistics from the scorebooks that have accumulated
since I began coaching the program in 1993. To even have recourse
to this history, we have to be grateful to the people who donated
their time to sit through the snow, rain, wind, and sun (and sometimes
hostile, impatient attitudes), trying to juggle keeping track
of the score, penalties, time left in the game, etc. I realize
I run the risk of omitting someone but I'd like to give my thanks
on behalf of the team to some of the people who made this information
possible: Kristen Taylor (now Kristen Hill), Sabrina Neeley, Rachel
Dunnavant, Ethan Ritz, Alison Blevins. We thank you all and for
those I overlooked, we thank you all as well and offer my apologies.
It must be
admitted that these statistics are not carved in stone. I took
the liberty of including only points, saves, etc. that were produced
during the spring seasons. And that's not to say that all the
seasons are equal. Total games played each season ranged from
24 in 2001 to 12 in 1997. Post season statistics are included.
It was felt that these deserved to be included as they were earned
against the strongest of competition. Also, it must be admitted
that not all scorekeeping was equally thorough and players have
been credited with only those points that can be attributed to
them from existing information.
I'll grant
you that this may do an unintentional disservice to the players
who preceded 1993. Unfortunately, the only data we have at this
time goes back only so far. If anyone has older scorebooks or
season summaries, I'd love to compile that information to make
this information all the more inclusive. Eventually, we'll try
to work up stats such as points per game, etc. but ask for your
patience as this all develops.
That said,
probably the greatest injustice is done to the players whose contributions
were not easily measured in points. I'm speaking here of the defensemen,
long stick middies, middies, etc. who did the dirty work, won
the faceoffs, dug out the groundballs, ran the clears up field,
took the ball away from the opposition, etc. I honestly don't
think any program adequately measures these contributions yet
they are without question as essential as whose stick last touched
the ball enroute to the goal or whose stick stopped the ball short
of the net. For all those unsung heroes, I take my hat off to
you.
I hope these
numbers bring back names and memorable games to everyone. It's
been my privilege to be associated with these players and to share
those memories.
Thanks,
