Since 1992, Carl Asp has served as the NCAA/SEC Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) for the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Among his various roles and responsibilities as FAR, Dr. Asp serves as Chair of the UTK Athletics Board and oversees student-athlete eligibility for the NCAA, SEC, and the University. One of his primary functions involves coordinating initial and continuing eligibility for the 20 student-athlete squad lists established at UT. Within this role, he is responsible for monitoring and submitting the 20 squad lists to the SEC and coordinating squad list meetings for the UTK personnel throughout the year. In addition, he is an active member of the Faculty Senate Athletics Committee, and he fostered the development of a UTK review committee for student-athletes with learning disabilities. He also plays an integral role in certifying the amateur status of all foreign student-athletes as well as reviewing and submitting student-athlete appeals to UTK and the NCAA. His role as FAR also includes representing UTK at annual NCAA meetings and four SEC meetings each year to discuss issues and vote on proposed legislation on compliance issues .
Throughout his eight-year career as FAR, Dr.
Asp has served as Chair of the SEC FAR committee, Chair of the SEC Scholar-Athletic
committee, and Chair of UTK's Gender Equity Study. As a liaison between
UTK and the NCAA/SEC, Dr. Asp has been a tremendous asset in promoting
academic and athletic excellence and fostering the highest ethical standards
for athletic competition at the Division I level
Roles and Responsibilities
1) Professor:

a. Assist the President/Chancellor of NCAA issues
b. Voting Delegate at NCAA meetings
c. Representative to NCAA

e. Compliance Issues
f. Academic Integrity

h. Oversee academic records of 500 Student-Athletes (S-A) for 20 sports
i. Responsible for the eligibility of the S-A squad list for 20 sports
j. Oversee/coordinate a number of NCAA requirements, e.g., graduation rates
for UTK, scholarships
k. Certification officer for all phases of eligibility for competition
l. Monitored/coordinated UTK's NCAA Self-Study and Certification (1994
and 1995)
m. Received training to be an NCAA Peer Reviewer for self-studies.
In October 1997, I went to
the University of Missouri as a reviewer.
n. Will be appointed to NCAA academic committee in the future
o. Certify amateur status of all foreign S-A

c. Oversee initial eligibility, continuing eligibility, financial aid for
the 20 squad lists
d. Set-up and direct UTK's Academic Integrity Group, which meets monthly
e. Continuing analysis of the academic integrity in athletics, e.g., grade
change analysis
f. Set-up/direct the FAR Office for budget and personnel
g. Chair to UTK's 36-member Athletic Board for two meetings annually
h. Coordinate 14-member Executive Committee of Athletic Board for two meetings
annually
i. Report to Faculty Senate and Athletic Committee
j. Chair, Earlier UTK's Gender Equity Study
k. Provide information within and outside the University on NCAA/SEC/UTK
