The University of Tennessee, Knoxville

MEMBERSHIP CRITERIA:  Student or employee of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville

  • Willingness to affirm and promote the seven principles of Unitarian Universalism:
  • The inherent worth and dignity of every person
  • Justice, equity, and compassion in human relations
  • Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth
  • A free and responsible search for truth and meaning
  • The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process
  • The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all
  • Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part

PURPOSE:  Offer support and presence for those seeking spiritual growth consistent with the UUA seven principles; network with other campus ministries to offer interfaith worship and observances; sponsor quality programming on a wide variety of religious/spiritual topics; provide a denominational presence during times of stress.The group may reserve space in a University facility to hold up to three (3) meetings for organizational purposes.  The Office of the Dean of Students will notify the University Center upon our receipt of completed Intent to Register Form.  Please describe the business that will be discussed: examples of events, activities or business that the organization has planned during these initial meetings:Introductions and exchange of contact information; election of officers; scheduling of future business meetings; survey of interests; development of programming calendar; planning of social, educational and worship events.

CONSTITUTION
of the University Unitarian Universalists at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

ARTICLE I: Name of Organization
The organization will be named University Unitarian Universalists at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

ARTICLE II: PURPOSE
The purpose of the University Unitarian Universalists at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville is to offer support and presence for those seeking spiritual growth consistent with the UUA seven principles; network with other campus ministries to offer interfaith worship and observances; sponsor quality programming on a wide variety of religious/spiritual topics; and provide a denominational presence during times of stress.

ARTICLE III: Membership
Membership in the University Unitarian Universalists at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville will be open to all students, faculty, and staff, regardless of race, gender, affectional orientation, disability, religion, or national origin.

ARTICLE IV: Officers
Officers of University Unitarian Universalists at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville must be students in good academic standing or faculty or staff members at the time of their election and throughout their terms of office.  Any student not in good academic standing or on disciplinary probation according to the Office of Student Conduct will be ineligible for office.

ARTICLE V: Term of Office
Officers of University Unitarian Universalists at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville are to be elected at the beginning of the Fall term of each academic year.  Elections are to be held by secret ballot, and a majority vote of members in attendance, from a quorum of no fewer than six members, is required for election.  Officers elected during the Fall term will take office on the last day of the Fall term and serve for one calendar year.  In the event an officer wishes to step down or at least one-third of the membership requests that an officer resign, a new election will be held within one month.

ARTICLE VI: Frequency of Meetings
University Unitarian Universalists at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville will meet the third Wednesday of each month school is in session during the Fall and Spring Terms. 

ARTICLE VII: Financial Statement
Funding for the University Unitarian Universalists at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville primarily will come from area Unitarian Universalist churches and the Unitarian Universalist Association.  The group may occasionally sponsor fundraisers for supplemental purposes.  In the event the University Unitarian Universalists at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville should dissolve, remaining monies will be forwarded to the Unitarian Universalist Association for support of UUA Young Adult Ministries programs.

ARTICLE VIII: Advisor
University Unitarian Universalists at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville will have advisors who will be full-time faculty or staff members at UT and who will serve to provide guidance and encouragement to the group.

ARTICLE IX: Constitutional Amendments
Proposed amendments to this constitution shall be submitted in writing to the officers for review. This constitution may be amended after a reading of the proposed amendment(s) at two general meetings and a two-third vote of a quorum to approve the amendment(s) during the second meeting.
