The Department of Sociology and the Center for the Study of Social Justice at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville will be presenting a conference that will integrate university and public concerns about the direction of universities and the concept of social justice.

The Department of Sociology and the Center for the Study of Social Justice will be hosting a conference on Social Justice and the University, Friday, April 29 - Saturday, April 30, 2011. The Conference will use the idea of social justice to explore the challenges universities face in meeting the economic, social, and global pressures of the 21st century. With faculty, student, staff, and community participants, the Conference is designed to begin an ongoing discussion of how social justice can inform the responsibilities of higher education. The participants come from a variety of academic disciplines, including Education, Modern Foreign Languages, Law, Philosophy, Sociology and Social Work, in addition to various community workers.   Conference topics include Foundations and Variations on Social Justice, Social Justice and Globalization, Teaching Social Justice, and University and Communities.

Location

The conference will take place in the Toyota Auditorium at the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy.

Directions and Parking:

General Parking Information

Parking in University lots is by permit only.

Public parking for a fee is available in the University Center parking garage (Cumberland Ave. and Philip Fulmer Way) and in noted on the map.

There is on-street metered parking and several other public parking lots near the Baker Center, including one located at 17th Street and White Ave. and one at James Agee and Clinch Avenue.

From Downtown:

  1. From Henley Street/441S, turn onto CUMBERLAND AVE SW/US-11 S/US-70 W/TN-1 S.  Go .6 mile.

From Airport:

  1. Merge onto US-129 N/TN-115 N toward KNOXVILLE/OAK RIDGE. (11.0 mi)
  2. Take the US-11/US-70/KINGSTON PIKE ramp. (0.3 mi)
  3. Turn RIGHT onto KINGSTON PIKE. Continue on Kingston ( 0.7 mi)
  4. The Baker Center will be on the RIGHT

From West Knoxville:

  1. Merge onto I-640 W/I-75 S toward NASHVILLE/CHATTANOOGA.
  2. Merge onto I-40 E via the exit on the LEFT toward KNOXVILLE. (1.8 mi)
  3. Take EXIT 387 toward TN-62/17TH STREET/WESTERN AVE. (0.4 mi)
  4. Stay STRAIGHT to go onto DALE AVE NW. (0.1 mi)
  5. Turn RIGHT onto 17TH ST NW. (0.5 mi)
  6. Turn LEFT onto CUMBERLAND AVE SW/US-11/US-70/TN-1.( 0.1 mi)

From East Knoxville:

  1. Merge onto I-40 E.
  2. Take EXIT 387 toward TN-62/17TH STREET/WESTERN AVE. (0.4 mi)
  3. Stay STRAIGHT to go onto DALE AVE NW (0.1 mi)
  4. Turn RIGHT onto 17TH ST NW. (0.5 mi)
