Scott Frey received a Ph.D. in Sociology from Colorado State University in 1980. He has taught previously at George Washington University, Kansas State University, and the University of North Florida. He has also held appointments at Argonne National Laboratory and the National Science Foundation. He has contributed chapters to recent books on environmental issues and he has published his work in numerous periodicals, including the American Journal of Sociology and the American Sociological Review. He has received research funding from the Ford Foundation and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of World Systems Research and serves currently on the editorial boards of Human Ecology Review and Sociological Inquiry.

CURRENT RESEARCH

1. Preparing a book on the globalization of health, safety, and environmental risks. Attention centers on how and why core-based hazardous products, production processes, and wastes are exported to the peripheral zones of the world-system.

2. Comparing causes and human responses to environmental degradation in several diverse geographic settings, including Cuba, the Ogallala Aquifer region of the US Great Plains, the maquiladora urban centers of northern Mexico, and the Special Economic Zones of southern Guangdong Province in China.

3. Analyzing the cross-national determinants of development, including various forms of human well-being and alternative forms of sustainability.
