The Dragoon Drill Company takes its name from the all-volunteer unit of faculty and students from the University organized by Col. Albert Lee Miller and who fought in the Mexican-American War. These original Dragoons were a part of the 30,000 Tennesseeans who volunteered in response to Tennessee governor Aaron Brown's summons for 2,800 troops, and fought gallantly throughout the war. The uniform worn by color guards at UT home football games is based on the one worn by those Dragoons.

The Dragoons present the National and State colors (flags) at all home football games and have marched in numerous ceremonies and parades, to include the 1993 and 1997 Presidential Inaugural Parade in Washington, DC. Annually the Dragoon Drill Company hosts the Volunteer Drill Meet for area JROTC programs, and also provides color guards for various events around Knoxville.
