Employment
The University of Tennessee Police Department maintains an ongoing search for qualified Police Officer applicants. Applications are handled through the university's Human Resources division. The UT Police Department cannot accept resumes or applications until they have been referred by Human Resources.


Qualifications for the job of Police Officer are:
  • Applicant must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Applicant must have no felony convictions or misdemeanor domestic violence convictions, no DUI's
  • Applicant must be able to pass both physical and psychological examination.
  • Applicant must be able to qualify with firearms.
  • Applicant must be able to attend 10 week resident police academy.
  • Applicant must be able to certify as officer in state of Tennessee after graduating police academy.
  • Applicant must have valid Tennessee driver's license.
Compensation:
  • Salary dependant on experience and qualifications.
  • Paid Overtime.
  • Longevity pay after 3 years at $100 per year up to 25 year top-out (i.e. 3 years-$300, 25+ years-$2500).
  • 12 days vacation accrued yearly (1 day per month).
  • 12 days sick leave accrued yearly (1 day per month).
  • Holiday pay.
  • All uniforms and basic equipment provided.
  • Tuition paid for Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy.
  • Salary paid while at academy.
  • Tuition waiver (8 hours if classes attended at UT, 1 class at any Board of Regents school).

Hours:

The University of Tennessee Police Department operates three Patrol shifts

  • First Shift (Day Shift) 7AM-3PM
  • Second Shift (Evening Shift) 3PM-11PM
  • Third Shift (Night Shift) 11PM-7AM

Placement on shifts is determined by officer seniority and needs of the department. New officers can expect to either be placed on Second or Third Shift. Officers work a 5 day on-2 day off schedule. Shifts do not rotate. Officers may be required to work on Regular Days Off (RDO) or holidays based on the needs of the department. All UT Police officers work UT home football games, regardless of the officer's schedule.
