
Isshin-Ryu Karate
Overview:
Founded by Master Tatsuo Shimabuku in 1954 on the Island of Okinawa Isshin-Ryu is a synthesis of Shorin-Ryu and Goju-Ryu Karate with elements of Kubudo. It comprises a series of Short Natural Stances. Isshin-Ryu Came to the America's around 1960 and was brought to this area by Master Harold G. Long. The focus of the club will be mainly street and real life application self defense with a large emphasis on Kata.
Meeting times / locations:
Isshin-Ryu Karate meets from 8:00-9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Studio 10 of the T-Recs Facility. The class is run by Dr. Donald J. Tyrell and Justin Edwards, a sandan in Isshin-Ryu.
Fees:
The instructors are not paid for their time, however, club dues are collected to provide for such items as mat covers and travel expenses. Dues are $45 per semester (Fall, Spring, and Summer) and are due at the beginning of each semester. Payment of dues entitles you to participate in all other classes at no additional charge.
Participants of the Isshin-Ryu class may also wish to join the international organization http://www.iika.com/ but are not required to do so.
Guests are welcome to attend a few classes before paying dues.
