Information for REU References
Letters of reference should be e-mailed to cplaut@math.utk.edu with subject "REU letter-" followed by the applicant's last name. The letter may be included in the body of the e-mail, or attached as a file. However, please avoid unusual file formats, especially since different faculty may use different operating systems. PDF is preferred, and files that can be opened by MS Word or OpenOffice are acceptable. While the deadline for application materials has passed, we will continue to accept and consider letters of reference until all positions are filled.
To the extent possible, the letter should address the following qualities of the student: ability to learn and work with abstract mathematical ideas and proofs, interest in mathematics, willingness to work hard, ability to work with other students, interest in a career in research, communication skills. One consideration is whether the student has previously lacked the kind of opportunity this program would provide. If there are other circumstances of which you are aware (such as disadvantaged economic background) that provide supportive evidence that the student would benefit from this program, please discuss them in the letter.
