UT Math Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)

figure

The UT Math REU will be held in Summer 2010, pending support from the National Science Foundation. There will be a further update on this website around December 15, 2009, including 2010 projects. Please read these pages before contacting the director with questions that may well be answered here. --And no, it doesn't help your chances at a position to e-mail him with questions.

Applications are normally due around February 1; a definite deadline will be posted later.

A tentative schedule is a nine-week program from May 31, 2010 through July  30, 2010. Stipends are expected to be at least $4000, and housing will be covered by the program. We also expect to have some funds for students to travel to conferences after the summer.

Participants in our program must receive stipends and housing support provided by our NSF grant, and therefure must be US Citizens or Permanent Residents.

Participants generally are expected to have done very well in at least one mathematics course involving rigorous proofs; ability with abstract mathematics as evidenced by grades and letters of reference is of utmost importance. The "Letters of Reference" link to the left provides more information about the qualifications we seek. Some projects may have programming or additional course requirements, as listed in their descriptions.

Each year we seek a group of students with diverse backgrounds, especially including students from small colleges or other instutitions who might otherwise not have access to a variety of advanced courses and research experiences. Women, first generation college students and members of other groups traditionally underrepresented in mathematics are especially encouraged to apply.

Below is a list of the 2009 REU participants, by research group. More information on their projects will be posted later.

The "letters of reference" form linked to the left has information about the criteria that we will consider. Students from small colleges and other institutions that may not offer advanced classes or research opportunties, as well as women, first-generation college students and members of other under-represented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.  Participants must be undergraduates, receiving their first undergraduate degree no earlier than December 2010. Because the National Science Foundation supports all aspects of the program, students who are not US citizens or permanent residents may not participate in the program, even without stipends or housing.
