Cartography Services Laboratory
The University of Tennessee Cartographic Services Laboratory(UTCSL) is a full-service cartographic production and research lab located in Room 209 of the Burchfiel Geography Building. Thelaboratory serves the cartographic needs of faculty, staff, students and all other offices within the University as well as others with map needs, such as federal, state and local government agencies. Undergraduate and graduate students in Geography are employed in the cartography lab each year, learning current cartographic techniques. Once trained, many of these students continue work in cartography through internships at such places as National Geographic or become employed in private sector firms and government agencies.
All work is created digitally on Macintosh and PC computers. The Laboratory has a complete desktop publishing facility using the latest available computers and software. Most mapping is completed using Adobe Illustrator, Adobe PhotoShop and GIS type softwares such as ArcMap, Global Mapper, and Geocart. Base maps are produced from data provided by clients, ESRI world data, or by scanning and downloading geographic information from internet GIS sources.
The laboratory is equipped to produce a wide variety of map and graphic products. Final output is available in high resolution on paper or electronic forms in both color and B/W. A variety of other color output options include color pre-press proofs, slides and high quality overheads. The Lab also houses an HP DesignJet 800 postscript printer. This inkjet printer has a resolution of 600dpi (color)/600dpi (black) and produces excellent prints up to 42 inches x 12 feet on a variety of mediums. Great for displays and poster sessions at professional meetings!
