The 2001 Pre-College Upward Bound Summer Component was a huge success by any standard. From June 17th to July 27th, 47 students in the Greek teams of Theta Epsilon, Kappa Rho, Zeta Chi, and Omega Pi lived in Humes Hall on The University of Tennessee, Knoxville campus under the supervision of residential assistants Jennifer Nolen, Tammie Taylor, Jonathan Smith, and Mark Gibson. They were also led by Coordinator Duane Gregg and Educational Specialists Janeen McCoig and Trillia Reed.

The students participated in a variety of academic classes Monday through Friday including the following: Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Ecology, English, ACT Prep, French, Spanish, Latin, Basic and Advanced Computers, Statistics, Public Speaking, and US History. Our instructors made all class enjoyable and fun while making them valuable learning opportunities for the students. Our program was fortunate to have the following instructors this year: Shawn Hirt, Kerrie Coley, Chase Vandervelde, Chastity Albright, Janeen McCoig, Trillia Reed, Angela Reyes, Maria Rodriguez, Kelli Gibson, and Lori Simpson.

These students also attended career and cultural seminars. These included astronomy, sign language, health and fitness, meteorology, campus safety, and stand up comedy. They also attended motivational speeches by Assistant Lady Vols Basketball Coach Al Brown and radio personality Hallerin Hilton Hill. Students also participated in many cultural activities including the following: chalk art, community service, movie nights, clubs, bowling, all types of sport activities, 4th of July activities, painting the UTK Rock, interest groups, a talent show, scholars bowl, game nights, a Smokies Baseball game, the Museum of East Tennessee History, portfolio workshops, a Greek festival, a poster symposium, and swimming.

A small group of student leaders, the Volunteer Society, also got to participate in a new mentoring component of our program. These students got to meet with and work beside a professional in their chosen career for several weeks over the summer in place of a few classes.

The awards banquet was held at Bearden Banquet Hall this year. There were almost 200 students and guests present. It was a wonderful time to recognize all of our deserving students, instructors, and residential assistants. We showed a 20 minute video that showed highlights of the summer program. Many students were recognized for their outstanding achievements over the summer. Trina Caciabauda and Matt McBath were awarded Mr. and Miss Upward Bound, Donna Holt received the Director's Award, and Lauren Goode received the Lynn Carlson Resiliency Scholarship.

From Sunday night July 29th till Thursday August 2nd, our students got to experience Washington DC first hand. The students got to see everything from the Capitol, the White House, and the Smithsonian Institutes to the national monuments, Ford's Theatre, and Georgetown.

This was a great summer and a great experience for everyone.
