Summer 2000
The 2000 Pre-College Upward Bound Summer Component was a great time for all the students in the program. From June 11th to July 17th, 2000, 55 students in the Greek teams of Zeta Chi, Kappa Rho, Theta Epsilon, and Omega Pi, lived in Humes Hall on The University of Tennessee campus under the supervision of residential assistants Christy Jo Seals, Angela Danovi, D. J. Buchanan, and Jeff Woods.
The students participated in academic classes, such as French, Computer, Spanish, ACT Prep, and English; and Odyssey of the Mind- a combination of Science and Math with hands-on problem solving learning. Teachers Janeen McCoig, Missy Logan, Shawn Hirt, David Paulus, Kerrie Coley, Maria Rodriguez, Derek Norton, Loretta Perkins, and Kayla Watson were there to guide the students in their learning in each subject. All classes were a combination of lecture and hands-on activities.
Besides classes, the students attended seminars about Campus Safety, Dating Violence, Broadcasting, the UTK Law School, Veterinarian Medicine, Resume Building, etc. They also participated in many residential life activities such as Open P. E., Chalk Art, Greek Team competitions, pool time, a scavenger hunt, Fourth of July activities, a Hawaiian Luau, Interest Groups, Scholar's Bowl, Game Night, Movie Night, portfolio workshops, and much more.
The 2000 Summer Awards Ceremony was held at Calhoun's on the River, Monday evening, July 17th, 2000. Parents and students were invited to attend. The evening was filled with entertainment, food, awards, honors, scholarships, and a raffle for a computer at the end of the evening. Parents and significant people in the students' lives were also given the PHT (Putting Him/Her Through) Awards to recognize the positive impact they had on the students' lives.
Following the awards, the students left for the summer trip to Alabama. From July 17th to July 21st the students had the opportunity to travel to locations in Alabama such as the Gulf Shores Beaches, Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and Auburn. They visited colleges such as Auburn, The University of Alabama, Birmingham Southern, and Samford University. Students also visited the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, The McWane Center, and the Mercedes Plant in Vonce, AL.
The summer was filled with new friends, learning, and laughter for the students in Pre-College Upward Bound Program. Not only did they have the chance to learn what college life is like, but they also had a lot fun experiencing it. It is a time they will never forget!
