Janeen McCoig

I am a former Upward Bound high school student, originally from Sevierville, TN. I attended Sevier County High School from 1991-1995 and completed the Bridge Program after graduation. I then continued to King College where I began working as a Residential Assistant during the summers for The University of Tennessee's Upward Bound Program. I received my Bachelor's of Arts in Political Science and History, with a minor in Secondary Education in May of 1999 from King. After completing my student teaching and getting my certification to teach grades 7-12, I began working full-time with the Pre-College Upward Bound Program as an Education Specialist and Instructor in January of 2000. I also began graduate studies in Education in January of 2000 and continue with my studies toward a Master's of Science in Theory and Practice in Teacher Education and elementary teaching certification for grades 1-8.

Presently, I am an Education Specialist/Counselor/Teacher with Pre-College Upward Bound and have been since 2000. Since 2001, I have taught Social Studies to 7th graders at Jefferson Middle School in Jefferson City, TN. I also coach Team Dance at Jefferson Middle School.

Upward Bound has been such an important part of my life since I was fifteen years old. The students in the program, the instructors, and counselors have all affected my life in ways that they will never even know. Although, I always knew that I wanted to go to college, I didn't have the skills to get there myself. Upward Bound helped me accomplish that goal and I will be eternally grateful for all the help I received. I am very glad that I had a chance to give back to the program as a high school student, Bridge student, Resident Assistant for the summer component for four years in college, and now as a counselor. I hope that I can now give my students as much support and guidance as I received in Upward Bound.
