Pre-College Upward Bound

Ellen Matheny

Ellen Matheny developed a passion for teaching mathematics while tutoring her classmates in high school.  Ellen then obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from East Carolina University, where she attended on a full scholarship through the North Carolina Teaching Fellows Program.

With licensure and certification in secondary mathematics, Ellen served as a full-time math teacher for public schools in North Carolina and Missouri from 1999 to 2008.  During this time, Ellen was affectionately known to many of her students as “Coach Matheny” as she coached cross-country as well as track and field.  She traveled to Australia and New Zealand with more than 40 students as a Delegate Leader for the People to People Student Ambassador Program.

Ellen began working with Pre-College Upward Bound in November 2008 and considers it one of the most fulfilling experiences in her professional career.  When she is not helping students with geometry, algebra, or other forms of mathematics, Ellen enjoys spending time with her family and beloved dog, Duncan.  She is also a certified Open Water Diver scuba diver.  Ellen was recently accepted to the University of Tennessee’s graduate school where she will pursue a Master of Arts in mathematics education.
