ACUI Campus Tournaments

From November through January, Down Under holds tournaments to qualify students to represent UT in regional competitions. Events include bowling, 9-ball, chess, spades, Texas Hold'em, Halo 3 (or some other Xbox 360 game), table tennis, Poetry Slam, and a team oriented academic challenge. You may participate in as many CAMPUS tournaments as you like, but if you qualify for multiple regional events, you will have to make a choice because events run concurrently.

How Do I Enter?

Students must be currently enrolled and in good academic standing at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Info on signing up will be available in September. There is typically a small charge of $1 to $3 per event to enter.

When and Where are the Campus Tournaments?

Most tournaments are held in Down Under. Some are in other campus locations such as TRECS or the Black Cultural Center. A schedule will be available in September.

What's at Stake?

Winners of campus tournaments may receive FREE entry, lodging, and transportation to Regional Competition. Travel distance and other budgetary constraints may limit the number of participants each year.

Leisure Programs Weekend(s) Info

Traditionally, all three leisure programs ( Recreation Tournaments, College Bowl, and Poetry Slam) have been held the same weekend.College Bowl ended the relationship with ACUI in 2008, leaving us without an academic competition in 2009. This year, the date for Leisure Programs Weekend was set, announced, and hotel contract signed before the partnership with NAQT developed. A requirement of that partnership is that the NAQT Sectional must be held the weekend of February 5-7, 2010. As a result, we have split the Leisure Programs Weekend into two events this year. It is our hope to again combine the three unique competitions in 2011.

Major Changes for 2010!

If you have been to a competition before, you know the routine. However, this year, to help things run a little smoother and bring back some school spirit, the following changes will be implemented:

  • 2010 features a revival of the coveted team "traveling plaque" awarded to the best overal institution. The plaque will be awarded this year and will remain at that institution until next year, when it is up for grabs again. We are still working out the details on how that will be awarded and will announce it by February.
  • Eligibility forms should be FAXED or scanned and emailed to Amy Anderson no later than Monday, February 15, 2010.Unlike last year, there is no requirement to turn in the originals at check in. HOWEVER, please bring them just in case your faxed or emailed copies were not legible.
  • If forms are not sent ahead of time, they may be turned in at check-in, but your school will lose points toward the "traveling plaque" award.Students will not be allowed to participate without a properly completed eligibility form.
  • Check-in will occur at the host hotel this year...No rushing to check in at the hotel and then rushing to the competition site to check in there too! Look for a table in the lobby.
  • Advisors ONLY are to check-in students. If an advisor is not traveling with your school, the group should elect one student to check in the group.
  • The opening session contains lots of valuable information, but attendance at this in previous years has been low. Attendance is therefore MANDATORY this year. Students not attending the session will be DISQUALIFIED without refund.
