What changes have been proposed in the General Education requirements?

The current General Education requirement was approved by the Undergraduate Council and the Faculty Senate in Fall 2003. A description is posted on the Undergraduate Council website http://web.utk.edu/~ugcouncl/ and is listed in the Undergraduate Catalog.

How can a Department get a course added to one of the course lists?

Departments that wish to have courses considered for approval are invited to submit a request to the appropriate General Education subcommittees. Forms are available on the Undergraduate Council website for seeking approval of courses for one of the General Education areas http://web.utk.edu/~ugcouncl/. Faculty subcommittees review course proposals for the Basic Skills and Broadened Perspectives components of the General Education proposal. Subcommittees are composed of faculty from a range of disciplines.

What general characteristics must courses seeking general education approval have?

Courses for the Broadened Perspectives areas must be at the 100 or 200 level. Courses receiving “WC” credit (Communicating through Writing) must have ENGL 101 & 102 (or equivalent) as a prerequisite. Other requirements are indicated in the course proposal forms.

Are General Education courses required to be three credit hour courses? Return to Top

No. Credit hours for General Education courses may not always be 3 hours. Some appropriate courses may carry more than three hours or fewer than three hours.

May courses carry more than one General Education designation?

Yes. Courses may carry more than one General Education designation. Courses on the Broadened Perspectives lists could also carry an “OC,” “WC,” or “QR” designation. However, do note that the third “WC” course is taken after completion of English 101 and 102 (or their equivalent), so not all courses on the Broadened Perspectives list would be appropriate for the “WC” designation. Some courses might meet the requirements for designation as a “Communicating through Writing” course and also as a “Communicating Orally” course. Please note that courses must receive approval by each of the subcommittees for the area in which they are seeking the designation.

What information is needed by subcommittees for course approval?

Basic information for course approval includes: Course title and number; an explanation of how the course goals meet the General Education requirements and help students achieve particular student learning outcomes; frequency of course offering; course capacity (per course & total if multiple sections); contact name, phone and e-mail; a representative course syllabus.  Additional information is included in the course proposal forms, which may be downloaded from the Undergraduate Council website, http://web.utk.edu/~ugcouncl/.

What is the deadline for submitting courses for approval? Return to Top

Course proposals are accepted through mid-October. This deadline allows time for subcommittee review and approval by the Undergraduate Council.

Where do I submit General Education course proposals?

Course proposals should be submitted to the General Education email, gened@utk.edu, and a copy should be sent to the appropriate subcommittee chair (see website for list).

Are there maximum enrollment requirements for “Communicating through Writing” and “Communicating Orally” courses?

Department faculty will determine the appropriate enrollment capacity for courses they submit for these designations with oversight by the General Education subcommittees. Maximum enrollments in writing-intensive (WC) courses should not exceed 35 and are more frequently capped at 25 or 30.

How long will courses remain on the General Education course lists?

Courses will be reviewed for retention on the approved General Education course lists on a 3-year cycle. Departments will be asked to report any changes in approved General Education courses to the Undergraduate Council.

What is meant by “sample assignment”?

A sample assignment refers to the description of an assignment that a faculty member presents to students. The subcommittees are not referring to actual samples of student work. Return to Top
