Upcoming TravelDr. Strayhorn will attend the following conferences/meetings to present his research or serve as keynote speaker:
TravelDr. Strayhorn traveled to San Francisco, California for the 27th Annual Conference on The First Year Experience to present a session. (02/13/08) Dr. Strayhorn traveled to Baton Rouge, Louisiana for the 2008 Annual Meeting of the National Association of African American Studies (NAAAS) to present two paper sessions. (02/13/08) Dr. Strayhorn traveled to St. Louis, Missouri for the 2008 ACPA Multiracial & Multiple Identities Conference to present three paper sessions. (02/13/08) Dr. Strayhorn presented a two-day session on “Using National Databases in Educational Research” at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, May 2006. Dr. Strayhorn presented, “The color and class of success: Examining Black and Hispanic college student persistence,” at the 19th Annual National Conference on Race and Ethnicity (NCORE) in American Higher Education in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Strayhorn presented a keynote session titled, “Keepin’ It Real: Promoting Black College Student Success,” at the 2006 National Association of Student Affairs Professionals (NASAP) Drive-In Conference in Hampton, Virginia, June 2006. Dr. Strayhorn was in Potomac, Maryland for the AIR/NCES/NSF Summer Data Policy Fellowship, June 25-July 3. Dr. Strayhorn was in Rome, Italy to present his research, HOPE for success: State aid, access, and persistence, at the 28th European Association for Institutional Research Forum, August 30-September 1.
ResearchDr. Strayhorn and two PhD students (Amanda Blakewood and James DeVita) conducted a study to understand the experiences of African American gay men at predominantly White institutions. The team is currently analyzing data from the study and will present their findings at several conferences during the 2008-2009 academic year including the ACPA Multiracial & Multiple Identities Conference. (02/13/08) Dr. Strayhorn and a research team (AART) conducted a study to examine the experiences of Black men in college. The team is currently analyzing data from the study and will present their findings at several conferences and meetings during the 2007 spring and summer terms. Dr. Strayhorn and one of his research assistants, Ferlin McGaskey, are conducting a national study to explore the experiences of Black men at two-year institutions. TeachingDr. Strayhorn will supervise a special section of HEA 602 (Directed Research) for doctoral students who have committed to working with him on a grant funded project on using culturally relevant teaching to improve student achievement in critical subjects like math, science, and language arts. Several students from counselor education will explore the role of counselors in high-need school settings while doctoral students in higher education will focus on access and transition issues. (02/13/08) Dr. Strayhorn will teach a new course, HEA 595: Race and Diversity in Higher Education, during the 2007 Summer term. Dr. Strayhorn will teach HEA 695: Research Applications in Education (Applying Quantitative Techniques for Policy Analysis) during the Fall 2006 semester.
