Introduction to RSS

Students will learn how to syndicate frequently updated content of web sites with RSS, a standardized XML format. For example: headlines, links, story excerpts, sports schedules, snow reports, university lectures, software updates, recent library acquisitions, job listings, etc. This class will also cover how to distribute web content by creating an RSS feed and integrate other sites web content into original web page by accessing others RSS feed.

Introduction to PHP

Learn how to use PHP, the Web scripting language that can be embedded into HTML. This class will cover live code examples showing how to do common web tasks, how to include code from outside the program, generate graphics and make a graphic based navigation system on the fly, processing HTML forms, flow-control, sessions, accessing a database, dynamic graphing, LDAP authentication, parse XML, and generate PDF output.

Panoramic Imaging

In this class, students will learn how to use any camera to take a sequence of pictures, load them into a personal computer, and then stitch them together to create spanning panoramic images and 360 degree quicktime movies. The software that will be used in this class is the Pixtra Panostitcher Version 1.4 which is available to download or purchase at http://www.pixtra.com Digital Cameras, Tripods, and the necessary software will be provided for students' use during class.

Prerequisite: Knowledge of Digital Camera terminology recommended, but not required.

Adobe Photoshop - Level 1 (Basics, Manipulating Graphics)

Participants will examine the Photoshop interface. Selections from the toolbar will be defined, discussed, and applied to a graphic. Invaluable shortcuts for opening, viewing, and selecting will be taught. Work with palettes and palette menus. Learn and apply the creative skills needed for manipulating graphics. These skills include selecting, editing, and rotating shapes, then adding the shapes to another graphic.

Prerequisite: Keystroking ability. Knowledge of Windows and terminology. Knowledge of mouse techniques.

Adobe Photoshop - Level 2 (Using Layers, Painting, Editing)

Unravel the mystery of Photoshop. Learning how to use layers is the key! This class teaches the fundamentals of layering. To understanding layering, think of stacking transparencies of different graphics to give the appearance of one image. Add some art to the mystery with Painting and Editing. Work with colors, brushes, gradients, and more.

Prerequisite: Photoshop Level 1 or have equivalent experience with Photoshop.

Adobe Photoshop - Level 3 (Masks, Photo Retouching)

In this class, participants learn to use masks to protect parts of an image from change, just like using masking tape to paint a room or a vehicle; or using a stencil to letter a sign. Students also learn to retouch photos. They will learn to remove unwanted objects from a picture, change a gray sky to partly cloudy, and brighten the colors.

Prerequisite: Photoshop Levels 1 and 2 or have equivalent experience with Photoshop.

Adobe Photoshop - Level 4 (Pen Techniques, Advanced Layers)

Learn to use the Pen Tool in this level 4 class. The Pen Tool allows the user to draw straight and curved lines called paths. This tool gives the user the electronic advantage of creating perfect lines, curves, and shapes. Participants will also learn some advanced layer techniques to selectively hide and reveal portions of artwork, to align images, and to add layer effects to a type layer.

Prerequisite: Photoshop Levels 1, 2, and 3 or have equivalent experience with Photoshop.

Web Page Essentials - Level 1 (Basic HTML)

Participants create their own Home Page. The class will provide students with the knowledge and hands-on practice of creating a simple web page, adding graphics and background. Participants will use HTML tags to create their page. An overview of location of files and file transfer will also be covered.

Prerequisite: Keystroking ability. Knowledge of Windows and terminology. Knowledge of mouse techniques. Some knowledge of the internet will be helpful.

Web Page - Level 2 (Tables & Lists)

This class utilizes the skills learned in Web Page Essentials. Additionally students will learn how to construct and incorporate tables, lists, and additional Web pages into their Web site.

Prerequisite: Web Page Essentials class or have equivalent experience with HTML.

Web Page - Level 3 (Cascading Style Sheets)

This class utilizes the skills learned in Web Page Levels 1 and 2. Additionally, students will create a simple stylesheet and incorporate it into an HTML document. Using HTML selectors, students will modify the font-size, font-weight, font-family, color, background-color, text-indent, and text-decoration Cascading Style Sheet properties.

Prerequisite: Web Page Levels 1 and 2 classes or have equivalent experience with HTML.

Web Page - Level 4 (Image Maps/Special Effects)

This class utilizes the skills learned in Web Page Levels 1, 2 and 3. Additionally, students will learn how to construct and incorporate image maps and special effects into their Web pages.

Prerequisite: Web Page Levels 1, 2, and 3 or have equivalent experience with HTML.

JavaScript - Level 1 (Basic Skills)

This class is for users who already have a solid understanding of Web Page design. Students will first learn the hierarchy of JavaScript commands, including objects, methods and properties. Students will then learn how to use JavaScript to create mouse-overs, alerts, rolling marques, and other nifty tricks.

Prerequisite: One of the Web Page classes, or have experience with HTML.

JavaScript - Level 2 (Advanced Techniques)

This class is for users who already have a solid understanding of JavaScript basics and Web Page design. Students will first learn how to use forms, pull down menus and text boxes. Students will then write a JavaScript program that performs a calculation.

Prerequisite: JavaScript 1 class or have equivalent experience with JavaScript.

Dreamweaver - Level 1 (Basic Skills)

This introductory class will provide students with a hands-on experience with Dreamweaver, an exciting WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editing tool. Students will create a web page that includes backgrounds, graphics, tables, lists, and links to other pages. Students will also Edit HTML and create HTML Styles. Pages will be posted on the WWW using FTP (File Transfer Protocol) or VolSpace, a new web-based file storage and transfer facility that does not require FTP software.

Prerequisite: Keystroking ability, and knowledge of Windows terminology and mouse techniques. Some knowledge of the Internet and HTML code would be helpful, but is not required.

Dreamweaver - Level 2 (Web Site and Cascading Style Sheets)

Give your web site some style. You will build a web site that will be continued in levels 3 and 4. Learn how to create and apply Cascading Style Sheets, CSS. With CSS, redefine HTML tags, create unique style classes, and create a style sheet that will be linked to all of your web site's pages. The site will be posted on the WWW using FTP (File Transfer Protocol) or VolSpace.

Prerequisite: Dreamweaver Level 1, or have equivalent experience with Dreamweaver.

Dreamweaver - Level 3 (Create a Form and Use CGI)

Moving on up, this class will be taught in the newest version of Dreamweaver. Students will create a Research Form that will gather information from visitors to the page. The form input will be captured and e-mailed using an existing CGI script. The form page will be added to the web site begun in Level 2.

Prerequisite: Dreamweaver Level 1 and 2, or have equivalent experience with Dreamweaver.

Dreamweaver - Level 4 (Layers: The First Step to Animation)

Go three-dimensional with layers. Using Layers, you will position and stack images, text, and graphics for a unique and complex 3-D design. Layers are also the first step to creating animation in Dreamweaver. The layers page will be added to complete the web site begun in Level 2.

Prerequisite: Dreamweaver Level 1 and 2, and 3 or have equivalent experience with Dreamweaver.

Introduction to Perl

This is an introductory course for the Perl scripting language. Students will be introduced to variables, if/else statements, for loops, and arrays. The class is hands-on and involves running programs in Unix. Unique differences between Perl and other programming languages will be emphasized. Upon completing the class, students will be well-prepared for our CGI class. Students with no programming experience but who possess an eye for detail are encouraged to attend. Intermediate and experienced programmers may find this class too elementary.

CGI Forms (Creating a Web Based Survey)

Participants will create a Web Based Survey using HTML Form tags. Students will create a CGI BIN directory and change CGI permissions in UNIX. Students will also modify a PERL script. The class will provide students with the knowledge and hands-on practice of creating forms for the purpose of gathering information from users on the web. A brief overview of the relationship between PERL and CGI will be covered.

Prerequisite: Web 1 class.

Web Imaging

If you're looking for a fancy way to display your photos on the web, Web Imaging is the class for you. Web imaging combines three of our most popular classes. Students will be taught the basic tags used to create an HTML web page. After the HTML skills, students will learn how to use JavaScript to perform image rotations on their web pages. Finally, students will learn how to perform the most common photo editing tasks in Adobe Photoshop.

Prerequisite:Proficiency in computer use and an active Unix account. Technology Survival skills is strongly recommended, but not required.

Flash - Level 1 (Graphic Animations)

FLASH is a program for creating graphic animations, interactive web pages, and MORE. Learn the basic components of FLASH as you scratch the surface of motion 'tweens and shape morphs to create a dynamic splash screen for your home page. Students will work with timeline, layers, symbols, and graphics.

Prerequisite: Proficiency in computer use, ie: Photoshop I and II, Dreamweaver I and II or equivalent experience.

Flash - Level 2 (Buttons)

Flash 2 will build on concepts learned in Level 1 as well as introduce new concepts such as the tint effect, paths, and movie clips as students build a complex animated button. Click HERE for a look at one of the files created in Flash 2.

Prerequisite: MUST have completed Flash Level 1 and feel comfortable with the flash interface.

Flash - Level 3 (Gradients and Shape Tweens)

Flash 3 will build on concepts learned in Level 1 and Level 2 as well as introduce new concepts such as Gradients, Masks, and shape hints.

Prerequisite: MUST have completed Flash Level 1 and feel comfortable with the flash interface. Flash 2 highly recommended
