SPSS Basics

SPSS Basics takes you from starting the package through data coding, entry and cleanup, creating new variables, how to get output for different groups, how to request an analysis or a graph, manipulating the output and where you can learn more. The hands-on lab session will employ the easy-to-use version for Microsoft Windows, but the menus are almost identical on Macintosh and UNIX.

Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of Windows, Macintosh or UNIX X-Windows.

SPSS Data Analysis

This seminar shows you how to run the most widely used statistics and graphics in SPSS, as well as how to interpret the output. Topics include: exploring your data to find errors, extreme values and sparse categories; examining the distributions of continuous variables; measuring the strength of association between two continuous variables; comparing two groups on categorical and continuous variables and where to go to learn more. The hands-on lab session will employ the easy-to-use version for Microsoft Windows, but the menus are almost identical on Macintosh and UNIX. One 2-hour session.

Prerequisite: SPSS Basics plus a basic knowledge of statistics

SPSS Survey Design

SPSS Survey Design shows you how to create a survey, or other data collection form using SPSS' Data Entry Builder. The resulting survey or form can be printed, placed on our web server or used for Computer Assisted Telephone Inter-viewing (CATI). The Rule Wizard helps you to create rules that prevent respondents from entering values that are too small or too large or that are illogical for that respondent. Accuracy can be further guaranteed by using either the double-entry or compare-versions verification methods. Based on answers to certain questions, rules can also skip questions that are irrelevant and, if appropriate, fill in the an-swers to those questions automatically. This speeds data entry and makes web-based surveys shorter and more likely for respondents to complete. The resulting database stores the data, variable and value labels created during the survey design phase and the survey itself. The data can be analyzed directly by SPSS or converted for use with SAS or JMP. In this hands-on course, you will create a short survey with simple error-checking rules and learn how to export it for web use. One 2-hour session.

SAS Basic Programming

takes you from starting the package through data coding, entry and cleanup, creating new variables, strategies for analyzing groups, how to request an analysis, manipulating the output and where you can learn more. The hands-on lab session will employ the version for Microsoft Windows with the Enterprise Guide graphic interface

SPSS Data Mapping

This class will introduce the basics of displaying geographically distributed data, such as population by country or state. The mapping capabilities of Excel, MapPoint 2000, SPSS Maps, SAS/Graph, SAS/GIS, Arc/Info and Arc/View will be compared and hands-on examples using SPSS/Maps will be shown. Information about Internet and campus mapping resources and for-credit classes will also be provided.

Excel Research

Excel for Research is an introduction to data analysis which includes Excel techniques most useful to students from engineering and the physical sciences. Examples with a science "bias" will be used.

Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of Excel or Excel Level 1 and 2.

ImageJ Basics

ImageJ Basics is a basic introduction to image processing using the menu-driven, public domain software called ImageJ. You will learn how to analyze and process images to extract valuable information about objects. The hands-on workshop will show you how to measure lengths between points, angles between two lines, perimeter and area of objects, and make grayscale intensity measurements. You will learn the steps for counting particles, making histograms and line profile plots, and how to use simple math to extract interesting features from images. ImageJ imports images from many sources such as digital cameras, flatbed and medical scanners, and microscopes. ImageJ is available for Windows, Macintosh and Linux at http://rsb.info.nih.gov/ij.

MATLAB Basics

shows how to use MATLAB to solve problems in matrix algebra. The course will include a hands-on introduction to the basic features of MATLAB, its programming language, data input/output, and simple visualization.

Prerequisite: Students should be familiar with basic programming concepts

Maple Basics

covers how to use the software to get answers to mathematical problems that may be either numbers or other equations. The course provides a hands-on introduction to the Maple user interface, use of Maple as a tool for calculations, symbolic algebra, plotting graphs and solving equations.

LabVIEW Basics I

LabVIEW Basics I is the first session of a 6-session course that will prepare you to use LabVIEW to create applications. LabVIEW applications are used for test and measurement, data acquisition, instrument control, datalogging, measurement analysis, and report generation. In LabVIEW Basics I you will learn the LabVIEW program components and use common LabVIEW functions to build a simple data acquisition application. Step by step instructions and lab time for the hands-on exercises will be provided to the students for completion after the lecture while the relevant information is still fresh.

LabVIEW Basics II

LabVIEW Basics II is the second session of a 6-session course that will prepare you to use LabVIEW to create applications. The power of LabVIEW lies in the hierarchical nature of the programs or VIs. In LabVIEW Basics II you will learn how to save applications and how to call them from other programs. Step by step instructions and lab time for the hands-on exercises will be provided to the students for completion after the lecture while the relevant information is still fresh.

LabVIEW Basics III

LabVIEW Basics III is the third session of a 6-session course that will prepare you to use LabVIEW to create applications. In LabVIEW Basics III you will learn how to repeat blocks of code and execute code conditionally or in a specific order. You will learn how to group data elements of the same type and how to write to and read from a file. Step by step instructions and lab time for the hands-on exercises will be provided to the students for completion after the lecture while the relevant information is still fresh.

LabVIEW Basics IV

LabVIEW LabVIEW BASICS IV is the fourth session of a 6-session course that will prepare you to use LabVIEW to create applications. In LabVIEW Basics IV you will learn how to build arrays of numerics, Boolean, path, string, waveform and cluster data types. Step by step instructions and lab time for the hands-on exercises will be provided to the students for completion after the lecture while the relevant information is still fresh.

LabVIEW Basics V

LabVIEW BASICS V is the fifth session of a 6-session course that will prepare you to use LabVIEW to create applications. In LabVIEW Basics V you will learn methods for making dataflow decisions in a VI using the case and sequence structures and formula nodes. Step by step instructions and lab time for the hands-on exercises will be provided to the students for completion after the lecture while the relevant information is still fresh.

LabVIEW Basics VI

LabVIEW BASICS VI is the final session of a 6-session course that will prepare you to use LabVIEW to create applications. In LabVIEW Basics VI we will discuss the common types of LabVIEW program architecture and learn how to run an application or check its progress from anywhere by using remote panel clients. Step by step instructions and lab time for the hands-on exercises will be provided to the students for completion after the lecture while the relevant information is still fresh.

Text Analysis

Text Analysis Basics provides an overview of how to use computing to help you analyze text from interviews, speeches, open-ended survey questions or literature. Three types of analyses are covered: qualitative, content and latent semantic. We will briefly describe the features of the nine text analysis software packages available at UT: ATLAS.ti, NUD*IST, Nvivo, PolyAnalyst, QDA Miner, SPSS Text Analysis for Surveys, TextAnalyst, SAS Text Miner, and WordStat. We will then demonstrate the use of QDA Miner for qualitative analysis and WordStat for content analysis. Depending on class size, we may be able to have a hands-on session with both packages. One 1-hour and 30 minute session

QDA Miner Basics

This class provides a hands-on introduction to the qualitative analysis of text from sources such as interviews, speeches, newspaper articles or open-ended survey questions. We will cover the topics of importing or entering the text, searching, coding, calculating inter-coder reliability, analyzing the text, comparing groups and exporting findings to other packages. QDA Miner is available for free download at http://oit.utk.edu/software.

WordStat Basics

This course provides a hands-on introduction to the content analysis of text from sources such as interviews, speeches, newspaper articles or open-ended survey questions. We will cover the topics of determining the frequency and co-occurrence of terms and phrases, creating a categorization dictionary, analyzing the text, comparing groups and exporting the findings to other packages. Since WordStat runs as an add-on to QDA Miner, the QDA Miner Basics workshop is a required prerequisite. WordStat is available for free download at http://oit.utk.edu/software.
