Social Science Education Concentration

Welcome to the UT Social Science Education Program!

The College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences, The University of Tennessee – Knoxville, has one of the few nationally ranked teacher licensure programs in the Southeast. Among the major factors which make this a program of distinction are a selective admission process and a mentored experiential base within a professional year of internship. This professional year experience allows students to earn 24 graduate hours toward the 36-hour masters degree.

All students are required to be admitted to the Teacher Education Program in order to progress in Professional Education course work; however, post-baccalaureate students may be granted permission to register for one restricted class prior to admission into the Teacher Education Program. The program is highly competitive; therefore, candidates are urged to think and plan ahead.

The College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences also offers advanced degrees in Teacher Education with a concentration in Social Science Education. Qualified candidates can earn an Educational Specialist or a Doctor of Philosophy degree. Advanced degrees with Social Science concentrations stress teaching Social Studies from kindergarten through grade 12.

The Social Science Education Programs are housed in the Department of Theory & Practice in Teacher Education, Secondary Content Fields area in the CEHHS.  Courses in this program are available to students who have been admitted to a licensure program or graduate education degree program.
