For teachers who want to add areas in which they are licensed to teach (additional endorsements)
The area of teaching for which the license is issued is the "endorsement." A person licensed to teach elementary grades one through eight has a license with an elementary endorsement. Once an initial license has been issued, additional endorsements can be added to that license with the completion of additional requirements.
Additional graduate work can be used to add endorsements. For a list of additional endorsement programs at UTK, see Additional Endorsement Areas.
The applicant who wishes to add these areas must complete an approved program and be recommended by the College. To be recommended for adding an endorsement in these areas, one must hold a valid Tennessee License with endorsement in the appropriate area (grades K-6, 7-12, or K-12). To obtain a Tennessee License with an endorsement in one of the following areas: School Counselor (Grades K-12), School Psychologist, or Speech and Hearing, the applicant must complete the approved program and be recommended by the College.
For teachers who want to be certified as administrators
Leadership 21, an offering of the Educational Administration and Supervision program, is directed toward providing beginning administrators with the “best practice” knowledge and skills derived from the field and from research. Students are encouraged to transfer these practices into the world of school administration. Specifically, the M.S. and Ed.S. degree programs are designed to prepare school principals and supervisors for licensure in Tennessee and for success in their initial administrative assignments.
This two-year program combines evening (5:45-8:35 P.M.) and summer classes with on-the-job field activities organized around real school problems.
Graduates of the master's program in Educational Administration and Supervision are making a major regional contribution in the area of school leadership as evidenced by the number of local school administrators who have graduated from this program. A great majority of students graduating from this program have been placed in administrative positions within two years of graduation.

For teachers seeking certification in urban education
The Urban Specialist program incorporates twelve hours of university credit completed over a two-year period. Participants are involved in two Summer Institutes as well as seminars and class meetings throughout each of the two years with a total of 100 contact hours per year, a technology strand that continues across all courses, and independent projects aligned with National Board Certification standards. The courses selected for the program can be used in partial fulfillment of a higher degree requirement.
