Admission and Progression

Applying for Admission to Graduate Programs in TPTE

1. Admission into Mathematics Education

  • Candidates should file an Application to the Graduate School and provide required documentation including transcripts.
  • Before beginning coursework and regularly throughout the program, students should meet with a Mathematics Education advisor. The student should consult with the advisor concerning the composition of his/her Master’s Committee. The committee must consist of at least three faculty member including the chair. The chair of the committee is the student’s advisor.
  • A maximum of six semester hours taken for graduate credit with grades of B or better may be transferred into a student’s Master’s program from work taken at an accredited institution subject to approval by the student’s committee and UT policy (one-half of a student’s program may be transferred from within The University of Tennessee system.)

2. Program of Study

The student’s advisor, with approval of the other members of the committee, is responsible for developing the student’s program with the student in order to meet both the goals of the student, of the program and of the degree. The program is recorded on the Admission to Candidacy form, signed by all committee members and the student and submitted to the Graduate School.

Application for Admission to Candidacy for the master’s degree is made no later than commencement day one semester prior to the semester in which he/she graduates. The Admission to Candidacy form may be obtained either at the Graduate School office or in the College of Education at A332 Claxton Complex. See "Course of Study" under M.S-Track 1.

A student in the non-thesis program must pass a final comprehensive examination on all course work taken in the program. The examination is not a re-examination of course work but is a test of the student's ability to integrate ideas and information in the major and related fields. It must be scheduled through the Graduate School in accordance with deadlines published in the Graduate School News and will be conducted by the student's Master's committee. If the result of the examination is unsatisfactory, the candidate may retake the examination the following semester. The result of the second examination is final.

A student in the thesis program must pass an oral examination over his/her thesis.
