Foreign Language Education Concentration

Master of Science Degree – Track II

The College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences has the distinction of having a nationally-ranked Teacher Education program, and is NCATE (National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education) accredited. Consequently, prospective applicants to the Track II M.S. program with a major in Teacher Education, a concentration in Secondary teaching, and seeking initial licensure in a world language (i.e., Classics, French, German, Spanish) follow these standards http://www.actfl.org/i4a/pages/Index.cfm?pageid=3384 and are expected to have the following credentials to be considered for admission into the Teacher Education program in Foreign Language Education.

Admission Procedures:

A world language (Arts and Science) major may apply to the CEHHS Board of Admissions in Foreign [World] Language Education after having met the following requirements:

  • A minimum of 75 undergraduate semester hours completed
  • A pass on the Speech and Hearing Exam (see CA 332 Advising Center for details)
  • A minimum of a 22 on the ACT-Enhanced
  • A minimum 3.0 average for a least nine matriculated semester hours of 300 level or higher in target language coursework
  • The ability to easily carry on a conversation (with native or near-native speakers) in the modern language that the candidate would like to teach on the secondary level; part of the Board of Admissions interview will be conducted in the target language.
  • A minimum proficiency level of advanced high (a superior level of proficiency preferred) is expected of all pre-interns http://www.actfl.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=3318
  • A substantial stay in a formal academic setting in the target language country (modern language majors only) or plans to complete same PRIOR to the interview.

The prospective pre-intern must be admitted by the FL Board of Admissions a minimum of one year prior to the internship year; there are no exceptions. Those having less than a B over-all average in course work may apply to be interviewed but will not be admitted to the Program if there are other world language candidates who are more academically and linguistically competitive.

Following completion of the secondary minor, the pre-intern must:
