Rita Hagevik, Ph.D.

Rita Hagevik is an Assistant Professor in Science Education at the University of Tennessee. Prior to joining the UT faculty, she was an assistant professor of science education in the Biology Department at NC A&T State University in Greensboro, NC.

In 2003, Rita earned her PhD in Science Education and Forestry from North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC. Before earning her PhD, she was a classroom teacher for twelve years of science in middle grades and an elementary teacher for Wake County Public Schools in North Carolina. Rita has been part of university-school partnerships and worked on two state-wide grant funded programs, the Coach 2 Coach program and The NC Partnership for Improving Mathematics and Science, while in graduate school.

Rita is interested in helping others to experience the thrill and discovery of science through investigations of the natural world. She has worked with scientists and has lead undergraduate and teacher research teams in environmental science. The focus of her research is on using geospatial technologies in schools, spatial literacy, and teacher professional development models. Rita’s research and projects have been published in the form of book chapters and articles. She was the recipient of the Global ReLeaf Award for Engineering Green from American Forests and was appointed by the governor as a member of the NC Geographic Coordinating Council.
