Patricia Davis-Wiley, Ed.D.

Welcome to my webpage! I am a professor of world languages and ESL education and have the privilege of advising doctoral and master’s students and teaching graduate classes in world languages and ESL methods, Content Area Reading, Clinical Studies, and Trends and Issues in Teacher Education.

Most of my professional life has been in the classroom, doing the thing that I love the most----teaching. Prior to coming to The University of Tennessee, I taught teacher education classes at the University of Houston, French at Baylor University, and French and Spanish in three high schools in Texas. I am a native Southern Californian who enjoys the water (I’m a PADI dive master), traveling, gourmet cooking, and learning about world cultures and languages. I hold degrees from the University of California, l’université de Montpellier, and the University of Houston.

My research publications have focused on the positive impact of world languages on academic achievement, the benefits of early language acquisition, block scheduling in the world language arena, and the changing demographics in the U.S. A recent interest of mine concerns the correlation of the GRE with the TOEFL. Recent past international outreach efforts have included a six-year relationship with Chuncheon National University of Education in South Korean and a winter sojourn at Jilin University in Chanchun, China.

I am an active and enthusiastic presenter at international, national, regional, and state professional organizations in both world languages and ESL. I serve as the editor of The ECHO, the journal of the Tennessee Foreign Language Teaching Association, and sit on its Board of Directors. I have the honor of being Tennessee’s state representative to NNELL (National Network for Early Language Learning), and am the curator of the FLES* (Foreign Languages in the Elementary Schools) database for the state. (The link is located on my UTK website.) Some of my other professional responsibilities include being the faculty advisor at UTK to Pi Lambda Theta (an international educational honor society), and the Instructional Team Leader in the TPTE department for Art, World Languages, and ESL Education.
