Mehmet Aydeniz, Ph.D.
Biography
Dr. Mehmet Aydeniz is an Assistant Professor of Science Education in the Department of Theory and Practice in Teacher Education. He received his M.S. with a concentration in chemistry in 2001, and his Ph.D. in 2007 from The Florida State University in Science Education. He has worked as a high school chemistry teacher for three years in Orlando, FL.
Research
Dr. Aydeniz’s research focuses on two main areas of education, student learning and professional development. He is primarily interested in empowering science teachers through pedagogical content knowledge to teach inquiry-based science. His other research interests include assessment of students’ learning, modeling inquiry-based learning in science classrooms, and validity and equity issues in standardized testing.
Teaching
In my undergraduate courses, I strive to provide my students with successful experiences with learning science through inquiry. For practical applications, I challenge my students to develop inquiry-based science learning activities using the learning cycle model of instruction. In my graduate courses, I focus on helping students to look critically at the science education reform initiatives. I also introduce my students to contemporary curriculum theories and challenge them to consider the political, cultural and economical implications of contemporary curriculum theories for our society.
Publications
Dr. Aydeniz is a co-author on an article published in the Journal of Educational Assessment. He has presented at numerous national and regional conferences including NARST, ASTE and SASTE.
