JoAnn Cady, Ph.D

Biography

JoAnn Cady is an Illinois native, having lived in Macomb, Evanston, and Gurnee. Before coming to UT in 2004, she was adjunct faculty for Southern Illinois University at their Lake County University Center site and middle school mathematics teacher at Twin Grove Junior High. Dr. Cady earned a BA in elementary education at the State University College of New York (Fredonia); an MA in Teaching Mathematics from Northeastern Illinois University (Chicago);and a doctorate from Illinois State University (Normal). Her areas of interest include elementary and middle school mathematics education, the professional development of elementary and middle school mathematics teachers, and how children learn mathematics. She is especially interested in the relationship between teachers’ practices and high-stakes achievement testing.

Dr. Cady began teaching in 1974 in early childhood. She has taught 3 and 4-year olds, kindergarten, and middle school mathematics and science in the states of Illinois and Virginia. In addition, Dr. Cady has taught computer classes from kindergarten through eighth grade. She advocates for the inclusion of technology in education as an instructional and learning tool. Her research interests focus on the mathematics educator’s development of pedagogical content knowledge and the implementation of inquiry practices.
