Dorothy Hendricks, Ed.D.

Dorothy A. Hendricks is Assistant Professor in Theory and Practice in Teacher Education and Instructional Team Leader of the Social Science Education Program. Before receiving the Ed.D. Degree from The University of Alabama in 1978, Dr. Hendricks was an elementary and high school teacher in Gadsden, Alabama and the Associate Staff Director of The University of Alabama’s General Assistance Center.

Since her appointment in 1979, Dr. Hendricks has taught elementary and secondary social studies methods courses and honors seminars at UT. Additionally, she taught teacher education courses as a Visiting Professor at Middlebury College in Vermont and coordinated undergraduate programs as Associate Director of The University Honors Program.  

Dr. Hendricks’ scholarly interests include improving instructional practices with emphases on integrating literature with social studies and teaching constitutional and democratic principles. Dr. Hendricks’ interest in constitutional principles has been continued through her positions as State Coordinator of Law-Related Education, committee member on the Citizenship Committee of the National Council for the Social Studies, and recipient of a National Endowment for the Humanities Post-Doctoral Fellowship on the United States Constitution.

In addition to her professional activities with national and state social studies organizations, Dr. Dorothy Hendricks is an active member of the National Education Association and Delta Kappa Gamma.
