Claudia Melear, Ph.D.
Biography
I taught high school science for seven years near Atlanta, Georgia before getting my Ph. D. I loved teaching high school students and after 17 years I taught once again in a local school. I've found that being a teacher in high school is equally as fun and satisfying as it was 20 years ago.
It is also harder, to some degree, although it was never easy. The way that it is harder is that teachers are under more pressure to show that their students are learning (accountability) by standardized measures. I find that because of this pressure, some teachers need more encouragement to use their natural creativity to design learning activities that require students to learn in active and student centered ways. This is my job and I take it seriously: encouraging and inspiring the gifted young and experienced aspiring teachers who join The University of Tennessee preservice science education cohorts.
I am the coordinator of and advisor in the Track I and II secondary science education program and a member of the doctoral faculty.
We have created several novel ways to prepare new teachers to follow their own natural curiosity in science. They are:
