Carol LaCava, M.S.

Biography

Carol LaCava has worked as the Coordinator of the Educational Interpreting Program since 1992. She is a nationally certified interpreter through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID). Carol received her bachelor degree in interpreting from Maryville College and a Master of Science in Deaf Education from The University of Tennessee. She teaches several courses in the program including American Sign Language, Principles of Interpreting, Interpreting in Educational Settings, and the field work seminar. Very active in the state and local interpreting community, Carol has served as the President of the Tennessee Chapter of RID (1995-1999) and is currently on the State RID Executive Board. She has been President of the Knoxville RID Chapter since 1993. Prior to working with the Educational Interpreting Program, Carol was the Assistant Director of Disability Services at The University of Tennessee for two years and worked as a teacher/counselor at the Tennessee School for the Deaf for eight years. One of Carol’s more recent ventures has been in co-founding a Children’s Theatre for the Deaf that performs for schools and public audiences around the East Tennessee Region.
