Bob Rider, Ph.D.
Dr. Bob Rider has been dean of the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences, the University of Tennessee, since July of 2004. He previously served as dean of the College of Education at Butler University in Indianapolis.
From 2000 to 2001, Dr. Rider was associate dean for research and graduate studies in the College of Education at Florida State University . He joined Florida State as an assistant professor in 1979, served as co-chair of the Department of Movement Science and Physical Education, and was director of the Center for the Study of Teaching and Learning.
He has presented at various conferences and published numerous articles in the areas of physical fitness and teacher education. From 1988 through 1998, he served as Project Director of PERFECT HARMONY, an extracurricular fitness and leisure program for individuals with disabilities. The program was named an exemplary status community education program by the Florida Association of Community Education in 1991.
Dr. Rider has received several honors and awards, including the “Bell Ringer Award” from the Indiana Department of Education in 2004, the “Special Contributions” Award from the Indiana Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance in 2003, and the Peter W. Everett Honor Award in recognition of distinguished service to the profession from the Florida Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Dance and Driver Education, 2000.
He received a doctorate in education from the University of North Carolina , Chapel Hill where he also earned a master of arts in teaching degree in health and physical education. He holds a bachelor of science degree in physical education from the State University of New York.
