English Education Concentration
Master of Science Degree - Track 1
Admission and Progression
The College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences, The University of Tennessee, has one of the few nationally ranked teacher education programs. The major distinctions of this program are as follows: admission is granted based on an outstanding undergraduate academic record and selected other factors; candidates must have completed a Bachelor's Degree and hold a valid teaching license, with an endorsement in English Education or a related field (in Tennessee or another state in the U.S.). Since admission to this graduate degree program is competitive, interested persons should seek the advice of the CEHHS Advising Center and the English Education Program Coordinator in making applications.
1. Pre-Admission to the Track 1 English Education MS Degree Program
- Candidates must have completed a Bachelors Degree with a 2.80 overall grade point average (GPA) and hold a valid teaching license. Candidates' overall GPA in English must be 3.0 or higher.
- Candidates must present acceptable scores on the General Knowledge exam and on one or more endorsement area exams of the Praxis II: National Teachers Examinations if they do not hold a valid teaching license from a state requiring these exams as a part of licensure. Exemptions from these exams correlate with State of Tennessee exemptions for licensure. Information about these exams and exemptions to them is available in the College’s Advising office, Claxton Addition 314.
2. Admission to English Education
- Post-baccalaureate candidates should develop a written plan with the CEHHS Advising Center to complete any deficiencies in the above requirements as soon as possible after making application for admission. Post-baccalaureate candidates not holding a degree in English must eventually complete 30 semester hours in English, to include 15 at the 300 level or higher (in addition to the requirements described in the section above). Candidates' applications for admission will be reviewed with decisions announced as soon as possible after all requirements for application have been completed. Coursework may begin in any academic term after notification of admission by letters from both the Graduate School and the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences.
- Application for admission to Graduate Studies should also be completed at the time of application to the College for admission to the academic program of study. Admission to Graduate Studies does not, by itself, constitute admission to the program of study but is an important component of the admission process.
- Once the candidate has been admitted to both the CEHHS and Graduate Studies, he or she is also responsible for meeting with an English Education advisor each semester prior to and during enrollment.
